Work and Play Morning Session:- 09.00 - 12.15 Each session begins with register and 'circle time', allowing the children to settle into the classroom. The children then leave the circle and choose from a range of activities which include specially designed Montessori equipment, ie. practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics, cultural and creative, as well as painting, sticking, sand/water, role-play, puzzles, musical instruments, ICT and the book corner - encouraging all-round development. We also have particular activities, themes and projects which run throughout the mornings/afternoons as well as a range of clubs - included in the session price! Emphasis is put on each child developing at his/her own pace with the encouragement and guidance from their class teachers. Children will be encouraged to work on a one-to-one basis, in small groups or individually. They may work/play with their peers or with the class teachers. This is followed by snack (milk/water, biscuit, fruit, etc), where the older children benefit from our snack bar, learning to share , turn take and take responsibility for their needs. They are also encouraged to tidy away! Snack time is followed by free time outside. During the winter months, we use our playground at the front of the school whilst in the summer months we are able enjoy our beautiful garden situated at the rear of the building. The children are able to climb, use the tricycles and scooters, balance boards, hoppers, balls and hoops, join in with circle games or use the parachute. Outside playtime constantly encourages the children to develop physically and socially - a time that they really enjoy. The morning ends with a story, rhymes and songs, before the children go home at 12.15pm Afternoon Sessions - Lions and Top Cats 12:00 noon - 3:30pm (long afternoon) or 12:45pm - 3:30pm (short afternoon) Parents may choose an afternoon session with or without lunch. Register and circle time take place at the beginning of the afternoon session (1pm) with the rest of the afternoon following the same format as the morning session. Should you choose the afternoon with lunch (12:00pm-3:30pm), your child will enjoy eating their packed lunch with their friends whilst partaking in a fun and sociable time in the lunchroom, before being welcomed into the classroom by their class teacher. Outside playtime in the afternoons is from 2:30pm-3:00pm and snack time is from 3:00pm-3:20pm. The afternoon finishes with a story or songs and rhymes before the children go home at 3:30pm. Children who attend Lions and Top Cats on a Monday afternoon are able to take part in French; Tuesday afternoon Art; Wednesday afternoon Fun Fit; Thursday afternoons Dance. The Dance and French teachers are qualified in their subjects and are wonderful with the children, allowing them to express themselves in many different ways whilst offering the children valuable learning experiences. Afternoon Sessions - Explorers Class 1pm - 3.30pm Explorers aged 2-3 yrs either attend the morning session or the afternoon session without lunch. Those Explorers who have turned 3 years old are able to follow the same attendance times as Lions and Top Cats, and take part in the afternoon clubs. Snack and outside play time follows the same format as the rest of the school. All-Day Sessions 9.00am - 3.30pm We are able to offer children who are 3+ all day sessions. This is particularly popular in the Top Cats' with children who have Autumn birthdays, as it prepares them for all-day when they go to 'big' school. (All children who are young will be considered individually for all-day sessions, so that we do not reach a "too much too soon" situation). The children arrive at school at 9.00am with their packed lunch (which is then refrigerated) and are collected at 3.30pm. Bright'n'Breezy 8.30am - 9.00am We offer an early morning club for the children in Explorers, Lions and Top Cats. Pre-School Children It is important to us at Discovery, that children are able to learn through play. Children at pre-school age do not differentiate between work and play as adults do. Therefore, the emphasis is on making everything fun, allowing them to make discoveries and build strategies for themselves: it is the process which is important and not the 'end' product. This not only means that children will enjoy what they are doing, but they will learn from it too - naturally.
